My work can be seen in booth 1601 at The Armory Show in New York this March. The Armory Show – The International Fair of New Art, has been the world's leading art fair devoted exclusively to contemporary art since its introduction in 1999. The fair is the successor to the highly acclaimed Gramercy International Art Fairs that attracted thousands to their New York, Los Angeles and Miami shows between 1994 and 1998. The Armory Show was first presented in February 1999 at the 69th Regiment Armory, the site of the now-legendary Armory Show of 1913 that introduced Modern art to America.

My painting, Child Standing on a Dresser, can be seen along with work several other artists in booth 1601, VSA Arts.

The Samuel I. Newhouse Foundation has nominated me for the 2008 Wynn Newhouse Awards. Each year, the selection committee nominates up to 15 artists and chooses 4-5 among them to win the award. It is an incredible honor to be nominated for this prestigious award. The Awards consist prizes totaling $60,000 which will be allocated amongst the winners by the selection committee. Serving on the 2008 Selection Committee are:

Phong Bui, Artist-Critic, Brooklyn Rail, Brooklyn

Chuck Close, Artist, New York

Joseph Grigely, Artist, Chicago

Wynn Newhouse, Collector, New York

Recently, I traveled to Fort Wayne, Indiana to view their 2008 Biennial: Contemporary American Realism. The quality of the work overall was very high and I was proud to be one of the artists selected to participate. The published catalog is available through the museum gift shop. To view images of this exhibition, visit http://www.fwmoa.org/exhibits/currently/biennial08.htm. Regrettably, I could not attend the lecture and opening reception on September 12 or the Symposium - American Realism Explored - featuring art historians Dr. Erika Doss from the University of Notre Dame, and Dr. Robery Cozzolino of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, on October 11.

I did receive notice that my painting, Two Little Girls in a Room, was selected by Juror Carl Little for an honorable mention.

On November 11, 2008 I will be speaking and giving a slide presentation on my work at the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) conference in Washington, DC. I will be part of a panel presentation titled "Making Arts Work: Art as a Viable Career Choice". This presentation will share recommendations based on national, state, and community-based initiatives. I will share my insights as an emerging visual artist on the Autism Spectrum, as well as an awardee of the VSA arts/Volkswagon visual arts program in 2004. This conference is for registered attendees only and is not open to the public.

I have just been notified that my painting, Children Watching TV, has been purchased for Access Living. Thanks to the donors, it is now part of Access Living's permanent art collection! I am keeping the names of the donors private unless they give me permission to mention them.

I was also recently selected to be a Gawker artist.
"Gawker Media is an online company founded and owned by Nick Denton and based in New York City. It is considered to be one of the most visible and successful blog-oriented media companies. As of January 2008, it is the parent company for 16 different blogs, including Gawker.com, Defamer, Deadspin, Wonkette, Lifehacker, Gizmodo, Consumerist, and Kotaku. " (Wikipedia.org)

Gawker media supports artists selected into their program by rotating images of their artwork in place of regular advertisements on their websites. If you go to gawker.com and hit refresh a bunch of times, you will inevitably see some of my work.

In addition, be/dc, an online art, design, and culture magazine has featured me this month. Go to http://www.buroeastmag.com/ and scroll down under "this month's features".

My trip to Chicago was a success. My slide talk was well-received and I was pleased to see the large turnout for the event on December 7th. Access Living has a key location in is downtown on West Chicago Ave right near the gallery district. Their new modern glass-front building designed by LCM architects won an award from AIA, the American Institute of Architects for its universally accessible, green, energy-saving, and attractive design. http://www.aia.org/aiarchitect/thisweek07/0817/0817p_pva.cfm

The quality of the soon-to-be permanent art collection at Access Living is phenomenal. The collection's artists include Chuck Close and Dale Chihuly.

I was pleased to find out that my painting, Children Watching TV, is hung on the first floor in the reception area. It is visible from the street and to everyone who enters the building.

Currently, many pieces are on loan from the artists themselves. The Curator, Riva Lehrer, hopes to make all the work part of a permanent art collection open to the public. To make this a reality, donors are needed to purchase the artwork so that it can remain at Access Living for life.

For more information on donating, please contact Riva Lehrer:

Three new paintings have been added to the site. Child Standing on a Dresser, Profiles, and Girl with a Leg were seen at my commencement exhibition, and are now, finally, online. There is also a new article about me posted in the Press section.

Recently, I was hired by screenwriter and producer Raphael Serebreny to be the production designer for his 3-D animated, feature film, Death Dancers. I am in charge of the entire look of the film: characters, settings, shots, lighting, color, etc. The project is still in its infancy.

On page 40 of this week's Baltimore City Paper is an article reviewing MICA's Juried Undergraduate Show. My painting "Children Watching TV" was featured as the image. The author, Bret McCabe, was impressed with the show overall and noted that my painting is "the one that stays with you the longest." The entire article may be read in the Press section of this site.

October 21, 2006

I will be opening my studio on Saturday October 21st as part of School 33's open studio tour. Feel free to drop by anytime from 12:00 - 5:00 pm. My studio is located in the Copycat Building, at 1511 Guilford Avenue in Baltimore. I am in building A (the right side if you are on Guilford facing the door) on the Third floor. There are several other artists participating, many of them on my floor so please stop by!

October 19, 2006

My painting "Children Watching TV" was accepted into MICA's Juried Undergraduate Show. It will hang in the Decker Gallery in the Fox Building until Sunday, October 29. Reception for the exhibition is on Thursday, October 26 from 5:00 - 7:00. This is a wonderful show! All are welcome.

My painting "Children with a Toy" is currently showing for the first time on campus in the 2nd floor Fox gallery. It can be seen along side many other excellent works and is certainly worth a visit. Hung on October 18, The Fox 2 show will be up until Monday October 30. The show was hung in honor of three guest artists visiting next week: Eric Fischl, Sam Messer, and Peter Halley.

October 12, 2006

Artist Statement has been re-written, reflecting clarification of ideas being explored in my current work. Two oil paintings and two pastels were shown in the Fox 2 Gallery at MICA this month. Currently in the studio are two oil paintings, an oil pastel, and a soft pastel piece. I expect for them to be finished this winter. Also, my website has been re-hosted and will hopefully run smoother.

July 17, 2006

www.ArtistKatieMiller.com is updated, reorganized, and hopefully, easier to navigate. The former Gallery section is now titled Images. Each piece is categorized once under the body of work it fits into, instead of being cross-referenced. You may now view an entire series at once as well as flip through the larger images as you could before. Also new is the ability to read about each series of work. The Press section has been re-done as well, with formatted text and images. The Mailing List now has a form (please let me know if it doesn't work). This news section is also new. If you have any difficulties with the site, please email me.
